Why you should travel to the Okavango Delta

Safari is the name of the game in Botswana. The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world, and it attracts wildlife to its life-giving waters. This area is one of the best year-round safari destinations you could find.

If you are following us on social media, you will have seen that we have been teasing you all month with posts on Victoria Falls and Botswana, to tie in with our two blogs for the month. The two regions combine so well too, and we thought we would touch on the Okavango Delta and talk about why it is such a sought-after safari destination.

Located in northern Botswana, the Okavango Delta offers a lush animal habitat for Africa’s Big Five and other grazing and hunting animals. The grassy plains flood seasonally, introducing amazing animal sightings and occurrences. Seasonally, and in certain regions, dug-out canoes, (traditionally known as the Mokoro), are used to navigate past crocodiles, hippos and elephants. Depending on water levels, boating is also available. Expect to see lions, leopards, giraffes and rhinos on dry land, as well as herds of antelope – the main attraction for the predators. The Delta is a must for any safari enthusiast.

We’ve already spoken about how combining Victoria Falls with Botswana is a 1.5 to 2-hour road transfer to Kasane, (close to Africa’s “Four Corners” where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe meet), where you’ll hop onto a small aircraft and arrive on the Okovango airstrip in the African bush! Direct flights are also available from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Maun, where there is also a small-aircraft service.

With a warm welcome from your guide when you arrive at the airstrip, your safari experience begins. During a gentle drive in an open vehicle to the lodge, excitement mounts with sightings along the way, and your guide pointing out interesting facts and features.

On arrival at the lodge, you are immersed into the Botswana life with animals in their natural habitat all around you, and the passionate and humble staff who are proud to be there and do their part for conservation of this interesting and awe inspiring destination.

If you have a few safaris under your belt and want something different, there is a variety of mobile camps available, ranging from rustic to more luxurious styles. Incredible lodges are available too, which again range to suite various guests’ requirements. We will steer you in the right direction for family travel or for those celebrating a special occasion.

I cried when I left Botswana. I never thought I would―but I did! A very special experience that you will have to do for yourself—one that I won’t ever forget.

Writing this makes me aware that it’s time to go back. It’s been far too long! I will be sure to share my experience with you once again.
